Bucharest conference - 2008 Transatlantic forum
Bucharest, April 1 (MIA) - The Bucharest conference - 2008 Transatlantic forum is a high-level gathering of decision-makers, political leaders, opinion shapers, and academics to discuss the most pressing needs and interests of the NATO community.
The event is organized by the German Marshall Fund of the United States along with Chatham House and is supported by the 2008 NATO Summit Support Committee.
The Bucharest Conference, which follows the precedents of past NATO Summits, will take place simultaneously with the Bucharest NATO Summit and serves as the official public platform for the Summit.
The Bucharest Conference, held from April 1 to 3, before and during the Bucharest NATO Summit, will include keynote addresses by the President Traian Basescu, the President of Georgia Mihail Saakasvili, the Prime Minister of Croatia Ivo Sanader, the Latvian President Valdis Zatlers, the Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves are among the heads of states and governments who will deliver speeches at this conference, hosted by the Palace of the National Military Circle.
In this context, the conference – organized by GMF with the support of MAE and Chatham House – "will be a special event," stressed GMF President Craig Kennedy, which will be attended by over 275 participants from 24 countries. Among them there are nine heads of states and governments, 24 ministers and MPs, and 40 presidents of research institutes, think-tanks and corporations from both sides of the Atlantic.
Some of the personalities expected at the Transatlantic Forum are the Secretary General of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu, the Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroianu, the Slovak Foreign Minister Jan Kubis, the Foreign Minister of Turkey Ali Babacan, the Foreign Minister of Armenia Vartan Oskanian, the Foreign Minister of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski, the President of the Commission on international affairs of the State Duma from Moskow, Kostantin Kosachev.
