President Crvenkovski addresses session on reviewing initiative for Parliament dissolution
Skopje, April 10 (MIA) - Macedonian Parliament opened its session Thursday with an elaboration of an initiative for calling early elections and President Branko Crvenkovski's address.
- The initiative is aimed to open the road of Macedonia's Euro-Atlantic integration in the most significant moments for the country's future, considering the Parliament's inefficiency for the last two years, said Rafiz Aliti, vice-president of the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) - the party that filed a motion for calling early elections.
- We believe that citizens should be given an opportunity to contribute to building more efficient and productive institutions. In these moments the elections are one and only way for the country to resolve this situation and take advantage of the second chance the US and its President (George) Bush has offered it for obtaining a NATO membership invitation, Aliti said, asking all parliamentary groups to support the initiative.
Addressing the MPs, President Brako Crvenkovski said that a decision on calling early elections was a legitimate act, but if it was accepted there would be no possibility for negotiations with Greece and hence for obtaining the NATO membership invitation.
It was suggested at yesterday's meetings with US Ambassador to NATO Victoria Nuland for Skopje to resolve the name problem in the next few weeks, Crvenkovski said, adding that on the contrary, the US support may fade away.
- Considering my constitutional competences in terms of foreign, security policy I can't and have no desire to free myself form the responsibility to inform the Parliament on all possible consequences for the country if the initiative is accepted, Crvenkovski said.
Obtaining the NATO membership invitation has been and is Macedonia's top priority, which is also the case with the preserving of the country's constitutional name, the President said.
- The name of our country is directly connected with our national identity, Crvenkovski said, pointing out that some countries are still denying the existence of Macedonian nation, Macedonian minority on their territories, Macedonian language and the Macedonian Orthodox Church.
He said that Skopje-Atones Interim Agreement of 1995 was breached in Bucharest at the rudest possible manner and Macedonia was deprived of NATO membership invitation in spite of the fact that all of the Summit's attendants recognized the country's success to meet the necessary criteria.
- We have accepted mediator Nimetz's last proposal... There were no other proposals before, during and after the Summit, which would have tested our readiness for compromise. The only proposal came from Greece - Republic of Skopje (Macedonia) - which was rejected by me and Premier Gruevski due to understandable reasons that need no particular elaboration, Crvenkovski said.
Macedonia should not wait for another chance to get the NATO membership invitation, and after the Bucharest Summit it is clear that there will be no NATO, EU membership for the country without a compromise with Greece, Crvenkovski said.
- I am certain that in spite of all bitterness, for the sake of Macedonia's highest national, state interests, we should gather all of our strength and in composed, rational manner resume the negotiations with Greece under the mediation of Matthew Nimetz and UN. And to do it right away - sincerely and with dedication. By saying this I neither mean that each proposal is acceptable for us, nor that we should act under Greek dictate. I am speaking about making an attempt to come to a fair, reasonable compromise, which will not present a treat to our national identity, bring harm to our national dignity, and will in the same time bring us into NATO and open the road for the EU membership, Crvenkovski said, pointing out once again that at the moment Macedonia is enjoying the strongest ever US support.
He called on the deputies to reconsider the initiative before making their final decision, as afterwards there is no turning back.
