Macedonia to hold sixth parliamentary elections
Skopje, May 11 (MIA) - The forthcoming early elections, slated for June 1, are the sixth parliamentary out of a total of 13 elections which were held in Macedonia so far.
Elections for people's representatives in the Macedonian Parliament were held in 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006. In addition to parliamentary, three presidential elections were also held (in 1994, 1999 and 2004) as well as four local ones (in 1990, 1996, 2000 and 2005). The citizens of Macedonia have cast their votes at two referendums - in 1991 when they endorsed independent and sovereign Macedonia and in 2004, when they came out for the newly-proposed territorial partition.
The coming sixth parliamentary elections will be held in line with a proportional model in six electoral districts. Approximately 1,74 million citizens of Macedonia, who are registered in the Single Electoral Roll, have the right to cast their ballots.
19 candidate lists of coalitions, parties and independent candidates will participate at the elections. According to election campaign surveys, main favorites are the coalitions led by the ruling VMRO-DPMNE and the opposition SDSM, as well as by the parties of Albanian community - DPA and DUI.
