President Crvenkovski appeals for fair and democratic elections

Skopje, May 10 (MIA) - Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski appealed Saturday to all actors that upcoming parliamentary elections are held in a fair, democratic, and peaceful atmosphere.

"Anything else than regular and fair elections in a peaceful atmosphere would be a disaster for our aspirations and the country's future. Irregular elections would not only represent a standstill, but also taking several steps backwards", said President Crvenkovski at a press conference.

According to him, election results are a prerequisite for faster Euro-Atlantic integration.

"Election results will be of enormous significance for our country's future. Macedonia must resume its NATO and EU path with accelerated tempo. This is a process without a serious alternative, not only for Macedonia, but also for other regional countries. This is a concept that opens perspectives and guaranties permanent stability and economic development", added Crvenkovski.

Taking into account, he said, that Macedonia has already held fair and democratic elections, showing its institutional capacity and democratic potential, "the question should not be whether we can, but rather do we want to organize fair and democratic elections".

"Distinguished citizens, a democratic society gives you the exclusive right to decide who to give your support to. Don't allow that this right is taken away from you or abused. By defending your vote, you defend your future and the future of the Republic of Macedonia", underlined President Crvenkovski in his message.

Asked about his ties with former party SDSM, Crvenkovski stressed he would not allow his direct or indirect involvement in the election process.

"This is my constitutional obligation, which I am ready to respect. Moreover, I believe that the best thing for SDSM and its young leadership is to face with responsibility and the test of political maturity by itself", he stated.

President Crvenkovski also commented on the name talks with Greece, saying they have been delayed as a result of the early elections, whereas the "status-quo" situation is more convenient for Greece.

"I hope that we will manage to make up for lost time after the elections", he added.

The Macedonian President also referred to the recently signed Declaration of Strategic Partnership and Cooperation with the USA.

"I would like to voice my support for the declaration, which I consider another proof of the sincere, friendly, and partnership relations between Macedonia and USA. I am convinced it will represent another incentive for strengthening of mutual trust", said Crvenkovski, adding that the declaration must not, in any case, serve  as a substitute to Macedonia's full-fledged NATO membership.
