President Crvenkovski meets EU member-states ambassadors
Skopje, May 13 (MIA) - President Branko Crvenkovski met Tuesday with ambassadors of European Union member-states to Macedonia.
In his introductory address, Crvenkovski urged participants in the election process to provide their contribution for fair and democratic elections, and incidents that have occurred in the past couple of days to be the last.
"The main task for all of us, including the diplomatic representatives to Skopje, is to appeal to participants in the elections to contribute to the creation of an atmosphere, where the winner is not as important as the fact that the country end up as the loser", said President Crvenkovski.
He urged DPA and DUI leaderships to face their responsibility and calm down tensions between their activists, and the Ministry of Interior to efficiently reveal and prosecute perpetrators, because, "each unresolved incident and unsanctioned violator is an encouragement for further violence".
According to Crvenkovski, the first goal of the new government following the elections is to intensify name talks as soon as possible, as well as demonstrate progress in the eight crucial areas underlined by the European Commission, so that the October Progress Report would include a recommendation for beginning of Union accession talks.
Referring to the talks with Greece regarding Macedonia's name, the President stated the dispute can be resolved only if there is a will for compromise on both parties.
"If force is used, imposing a solution that endangers our national identity and the dignity of our people, then a solution is not possible", added Crvenkovski.
He said that Macedonia's NATO and EU integration should contribute towards permanent stabilization and development, but if the price for full-fledged membership causes internal divisions and destabilization, then results would not be achieved.
President Crvenkovski also commented on the series of incidents, where Macedonian citizens were victims of violence and humiliation.
"If we add to this several problematic economic measures, which jeopardise interests of Macedonian companies, we have an ambiance that definitely does not contribute to good neighborly relations or strengthening of mutual trust", said Crvenovski, adding that observance of the principle of good neighborly relations should not be asked only from aspirant-countries, but from EU member-states too.
Referring to regional developments, Crvenkovski focused on the Kosovo independence issue, emphasizing that the new government should quickly mould a position on Kosovo, which has been delayed due to the NATO Summit and the upcoming elections.
"It is of exceptional significance for Macedonia that the process of the northern border demarcation begins, in line with the Ahtisaari plan. Any other solution that would in fact mean beginning of new border talks can open other problems, which is the least Kosovo, Macedonia and the region in general need", stressed President Crvenkovski.
He underlined that the Macedonian position on the issue should be built taking into account the stance of majority EU and NATO member-states, and reflect the structure and attitude of Macedonian citizens.
