UN marks International Day of Peacekeepers
New York, May 29 (MIA) - The international community pays tribute Thursday to all the dedicated, courageous, and selfless men and women who have served in the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations for their high-level professionalism, and honors the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.
Peacekeeping missions are perhaps the United Nations' most visible presence in conflict zones and in areas that require UN assistance for institution building. Given the effort and impact of such operations, the UN Peace Keeping Forces were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1988.
While the term "peacekeeping" is not found in the UN Charter, it is a highly accepted and recognized method for resolving disputes peacefully and comes between negotiation and mediation found in Chapter VI of the UN Charter, and the more forceful action as authorized under Chapter VII of the same document.
Recognizing the importance of peacekeeping and paying tribute to its many peacekeepers, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2002 designating May 29 every year as International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
The first UN peacekeeping mission was established in 1948, when the Security Council authorized the deployment of UN military observers to the Middle East to monitor the Armistice Agreement between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Since then, over 60 UN peacekeeping operations have been mobilized around the world.
UN peacekeeping continues to evolve, both conceptually and operationally, to respond to the demands of different conflicts and the changing political landscape. Confronted by the rising demand for increasingly complex peace operations, the United Nations in the past few years has been overstretched and challenged as never before. The organization has worked vigorously to strengthen its capacity to manage and sustain field operations and thus contribute to the most important function of the United Nations, which is maintaining international peace and security.
