PM Gruevski attends McCain's formal presidential nomination at the Republican Convention
Skopje, September 5 (MIA) - PM Nikola Gruevski attended the US National Republican Convention, which took place in Saint Paul, Minneapolis and the address of the official acceptance of the nomination as candidate to run for the US President by the Republican Party, John McCain, Government's Press Office reported Friday.
On the sidelines of the Convention, PM Nikola Gruevski met with congressmen, senators and representatives of the business community among whom with the former US Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger, long-standing associate to John McCain and member of the Republican Party.
- He welcomed the presence of PM Gruevski before the crowded auditorium, and said that the Republic of Macedonia represents the most successful example on the Balkans how a democracy can be developed. During the bilateral meeting Eagleburger pointed out that our country fulfils all criteria for NATO membership and at the same time represents reliable partner to the US, reads the press release.
During the visit to the US, PM Gruevski met several congressmen among whom is David Dreier, Vice President of the House Democracy Assistance Commission, commission through which the Republic of Macedonia had received different kind of assistance and support in the past two years. Dreier visited Macedonia twice during the past two years in the frameworks of Congress delegation and undoubtedly expressed support in relation to constitutional name of our country.
Also Gruevski on the sidelines of the National Republican Convention met with John Bruton, the former Irish Prime Minister and current EU Ambassador to Washington, Antonio Lopez-Isturiz, Secretary General of the European People’s Party, Eric Moen, Secretary General of the International Democratic Union, global organisation of right centre parties including 80 parties world-wide.
Roundtable on topic “National Security in a Global Era” was organised in the frameworks of the National Republican Convention at which Richard Burt, senior advisor of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies and former US Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs delivered an address. Also the congressman from Michigan Pete Hoekstra, the congressman from Illinois Marc Kirk, the congressman Jim Kolbe who was re-elected 11 times in the US Congress, former Secretary of the Navy John Leman, the National Security Advisor Gerald Ford and George Bush Senior, Brent Scowcroft, as well as former US Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger addressed the roundtable.
The roundtable focused on foreign policy of the US and US policy towards Europe, Balkans, Middle East and China. Also speakers presented their positions on future organisation of NATO, UN and other international organisations, press release reads.
First Lady of the United States Laura Bush addressed the first day of the Republican Convention and George Bush Senior was present. Joseph Lieberman, senator who was candidate of the Democrats for Vice President in 2000 together with Al Gore address the Convention’s second day while on Wednesday the Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, Republican Vice-Presidential candidate addressed the Convention.
The rest of the speakers included the former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, the former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee who were Republican candidates in inner circles of the presidential campaign.
