UNDP, Civil Society Organizations sign agreement on realizing 'One Voter-One-Ballot' project
Skopje, October 14 (MIA) - The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and civil society organizations in Macedonia (MOST, Kumanovka, Common Values, Polio Plus, National Council of Women of Macedonia, ADI, CPRM, Women's Forum Tetovo and Women's Organization of Sveti Nikole municipality) signed contracts Tuesday, kicking off the implementation of 'One-Voter-One-Ballot' Small Grants Activity.
UNDP has allocated US$ 154,000 to support these projects that will cover a wide area of the country's territory. The project, implemented by the civil society organizations, aimed at civic education and awareness rising on the issue of proxy and family voting will focus on: capacity building and education of women in rural areas and other vulnerable groups ; public campaign to draw the attention of the wider public on the issue and publishing of materials tackling the issue of proxy and family voting. The will last for three months and the timing is supposed to correspond with the upcoming March 2009 presidential and local elections in order to improve the environment in which the elections will take place.
The 'One-Voter-One-Ballot': Addressing Proxy and Family Voting' project is initiated through a grant from the United Nations Democracy Fund and Norway's donation. The project's implementing partner is the State Election Commission in close cooperation with the Ministries of Justice; Education and Science; Bureau for Development of Education; as well as Labor and Social Policy.
The Small Grant Component is one of the activities of UN initiative, together with placing the problem of proxy and family voting on the political agenda; strengthening the capacity of election authorities, stakeholders and voter awareness.
