Health Minister Osmani visits Voluntary HIV/AIDS Counselling and Testing Centre
Skopje, November 30 (MIA) – Health Minister Bujar Osmani Sunday visited the Voluntary HIV/AIDS Counselling and Testing Centre in Skopje's Clinic for Infectious Diseases on the occasion of the World AIDS Day – December 1.
Osmani said that the Republic of Macedonia is considered low HIV prevalence country and a total of 111 HIV infected cases of which 60 fatal were registered from 1987 until present day.
- Only in 2008 eight new cases have been registered. Health Ministry makes great efforts through 13 Voluntary HIV/AIDS Counselling and Testing Centres to keep Macedonia a low HIV prevalence country. In cooperation with the international organisations we cover the entire therapy for infected persons and is given according to latest protocols, Osmani said.
National HIV/AIDS Coordinator Milena Stefanovic said that the new eight registered cases have already AIDS and two of them died.
- The AIDS is transmitted mainly heterosexually. Among the infected dominates young sexually active population from 23 to 40 years of age, mainly males. Their social status and education are from highest to lowest degree, people who travel and exit Macedonia and also those who have never left the country, Stefanovic said.
Around of 1.000 tests for HIV diagnosis have been made in these 13 Voluntary HIV/AIDS Counselling and Testing Centres in the last 6 months.
