All-in-1 mobile charger by 2010

Brussels, July 1 (MIA) - Mobile phone giants are finally pulling the plug on waste by introducing a universal charger.

The deal will mean that from next year families can clear out cupboards packed with units for different handsets.

Ten firms - including Apple, Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Samsung - agreed a voluntary move yesterday to cover 90% of the European mobile phone market.

But the industry only reached its understanding with the European Commission under the threat of strict laws to enforce a switch.

Eu Industry Commissioner Gunter Verheugen said: "I'm pleased the industry found an agreement which will make life simpler for consumers.

"This also means less electronic waste, because people will no longer have to throw away chargers when buying new phones."

Handsets compatible with the new charger - which will have a micro-USB connection - are to go on sale in 2010. The move should also boost energy efficiency.
