Ministry of Culture works on including Kokino archaeological site in UNESCO list
Skopje, February 8 (MIA) - The Ministry of Culture has been working on including the archaeological site Kokino in the list of UNESCO World Heritage List.
- Towards further international valorization of this site, being enlisted by NASA few years ago as one of the oldest observatories in the world, we have also decided to try to include the site, already part of the tentative list, in the UNESCO World Heritage List, Culture Minister Elizabeta kanceska-Milevska said at a press conference on Monday.
Kokino is an important archaeological site and a megalithic observatory located some thirty kilometers on the northeast of Kumanovo. This site has a diameter of 100 meters; it is scaled on two levels, underneath of the mountain peak Tatikev Kamen, at an altitude of 1013 m. At the moment of its discovery in 2001, it was believed to be a special mountain sanctuary from the Bronze Age.
The more detailed archaeo-astronomical research carried out in the following two years showed that the locality has all the characteristics of a holy place, but also of an older observatory for observation of celestial objects.
