Gallup Balkan Monitor: Western Balkan countries still nourish their pro-European sentiment

Skopje, November 20 (MIA) - Despite the crisis that the Balkan region is going through, a strong pro-European feeling remains. If an EU accession referendum was held today, all of the Western Balkans countries would vote yes (70% or more give support in all countries) … with one exception … Croatia - the country currently closest to joining the EU, say the latest Gallup Balkan Monitor survey.

People in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro were mostly satisfied with their government's performance: more than two-fifths in each country called it 'good' or 'excellent'.

In Macedonia, two-fifths of Macedonians and Albanians consider that relations between their two ethnic groups have improved over the past year – while 20% of Albanians and 11% of Macedonians stated the opposite.

Among Macedonians, however, the proportion of people fearing an armed conflict – while still being the highest in the region – has steadily declined since 2006 and is now at 31%.

Many citizens in the region feel that their countries are going in the wrong direction, being unhappy about the living standard, which is not the case with Albanians in Kosovo and Albania - they are satisfied with the standard and look optimistically to the future.

Across all countries in the Western Balkans, more than half of the respondents state that corruption is endemic in their national government.

As well as EU accession, greater neighborhood integration is seen as a possible answer. More Balkan citizens see the need for closer regional cooperation: 51% of respondents are convinced that their country needs to develop stronger ties with their neighbours, with only 6% of Balkan citizens stating that the ties are already too strong.

The survey was conducted in September of 2009. It is being conducted annually and upholds the strictest standards as to the representativeness of the survey, with 1,000 interviewees per country. The Gallup Balkan Monitor has been designed to cover all topics of interest to policymakers, scholars and the media.

The Gallup Balkan Monitor is the fruit of a successful partnership between the European Fund for the Balkans and Gallup. The 'Monitor' is the first-ever in-depth survey of the whole Western Balkans. It reflects Balkan residents' views on all aspects of their lives and provides strategic insights into today's Balkans' socio-economic, socio-political and multi-cultural dimensions.

Results of the latest Gallup Balkan Monitor survey have been presented by Gallup and the European Fund for the Balkans in a report and an event at the European Policy Centre on November 17.
