Rare white rhino born in Israeli zoo

Tel Aviv, 21 June 2012 (MIA) - The rare white rhinoceros, also known as the square-lipped rhino, was born on Monday to its 20-year-old mother, Tanda.

Pregnant for 18 months with the calf, it is the third time Tanda has given birth, and the second at the Ramat Gan zoo.

Tanda, who weighs two tonnes, originated from South Africa and has now been at the zoo for six years.

The largest of the five remaining species of rhino left, the white rhinoceros is world's largest land mammal after the three species of elephant.

An endangered species, South Africa lost 448 of the rhinos to poaching in 2011, according to official government figures.
