FM Poposki at meeting of EU-Macedonia Stabilization and Association Council

Skopje, 23 January 2012 (MIA) - A meeting of the EU-Macedonia Stabilization and Association Council will be held in Brussels on Monday, chaired by Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki.

The Macedonian delegation also includes Vice Premier for European Affairs Teuta Arifi, whereas the EU will be represented by Danish Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal in the capacity of Council co-chair, along with Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule and EU's External Action Service Managing Director for Russia, Eastern Neighbourhood and the Western Balkans, Miroslav Lajcak.

Discussions will focus on EU-Macedonia bilateral relations within the Stabilization and Association Process, meeting of political and economic criteria, legislation harmonization with the EU Acquis, financial cooperation, and implementation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement. Delegations will also exchange opinions on Western Balkans developments and other international issues of mutual interest.

FM Poposki is set to meet officials from the European Commission, EU's External Action Service, and the European Parliament in the course of the Brussels visit (January 23-25).

The Stabilization and Association Agreement between the Republic of Macedonia and the EU that entered into force on 1 April 2004, setting the framework for pursuing the contractual relations between Macedonia and the EU until its accession to the Union. Being the highest form of institutional cooperation between the two parties, the Stabilization and Association Council meets on an annual basis with the two sides being represented on a foreign ministerial level. Taking into consideration the rotating nature of the Stabilization and Association Council chairmanship, this year’s meeting will be presided by the Republic of Macedonia.
