NATO backs Western Balkans' Euro-Atlantic ambitions: general

Berlin, 25 September 2017 (MIA) - Security in the Western Balkans serves the whole of Europe, thus we have been investing so much in security and stability in the region, General Petr Pavel, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee has told Deutsche Welle.
NATO, he said, wants to maintain its presence, focus and commitment to the Western Balkans as long as our help is needed as we are supporting the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the countries in the region.
According to the general, the security climate has changed significantly over the past two years.
"Stability and peace in the Western Balkans is being threatened by several challenges, including Russia and terrorism," Pavel stated.
Asked what kind of a strategy is being planned by NATO to neutralize Russia's influence in the region, the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee responded: Any external interference, namely cyber attacks, propaganda or instigation of revolts, is against the principles of good international relations. We will encourage the government to increase their resilience against such interference and to make their democratic institutions remain strong, to fight against corruption and to modernize and implement necessary reforms.
