Sefcovic: EU not urging Serbia to distance from Russia in energy terms

Belgrade, 12 June 2015 (MIA) - The European Union is not urging Serbia to distance itself from Russia in energy terms, said European Commission Vice President in charge of Energy Union, Maros Sefcovic.

Sefcovic told the Serbian National TV that EU's priority in the region is gas inter-connection between Bulgaria and Serbia and linking with gas terminals in Croatia.

Regarding Russian plans, EU wants gas deliveries to be within Europe, not on the Turkish border.

Asked whether the advice given to Serbia to diversify its energy supply in fact means that the country should distance itself from Russia, Sefcovic said "definitely no".

"We want every European country to have greater energy security, meaning access to at least three different gas sources. On one hand, this increases competition and has an effect on the price, but also increases energy security on the other", added the EU Commissioner.

According to him, Turkish Stream needs discussions, since it is only mentioned at press conferences.

"We need to know its effect on the energy security in Europe and whether European laws will be observed. Moreover, it opens questions about the Ukraine. This stream must be maintained, these are pipelines that have been there for decades, even in the period of the Cold War. A constructive atmosphere is required for the 'Turkish Stream' talks, including the commercial aspect of the project, in order to see whether it fits within the energy union strategy", stressed Sefcovic.
