UN refugee agency alters Greek, Balkans plan as flows slow

Geneva, 10 June 2016 (MIA) - The U.N. refugee agency and partners are revising their operations in Greece and the Balkans, and seeking more money to help tens of thousands of people stuck in Greece, AP reports.

UNCHR says a European Union-Turkey accord on handling migrants has vastly reduced flows through the Turkey-to-Greece route that over 1 million migrants have crossed since January 2015 to reach Europe.

UNHCR says some 57,000 people remain stranded in Greece, and says dealing with people who settle is more costly than giving temporary aid to people moving deeper into Europe.

Spokesman William Spindler said Friday that UNHCR and 60 partner organizations are seeking nearly $670 million for the regional refugee and migrant response plan, up from $550 million when launched in January.

He said many asylum-seekers aren't allowed to leave Greek islands.
