Protests against President Vucic continue in Belgrade

Belgrade, 12 April 2017 (MIA) - Protests continued in the Serbian capital Belgrade for the ninth day in a row, after the landslide victory of Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic at the Presidential elections. Protesters have different demands, including vote recount, education reform and support for the defeated candidate Sasa Jankovic. Other cities have also joined in the rallies that are organized under the banner "against the dictatorship".
Vucic won in the first round of the elections with 55 percent of the vote. Several polling stations are doing recounts after reported irregularities, and this has helped spark the protests which have drawn tens of thousands to the streets. Protests are also aimed against the public RTS television station which, protesters say, did not cover the elections fairly.
Vucic decided to retire his fellow party member Tomislav Nikolic from the President's seat and compete in the elections himself, saying that he needs a decisive win to stave off the bout of political instability that has taken over the Balkans. He warned against a "Macedonian scenario" of political interference and blockades and called on his party base to rally behind him to keep Serbia politically stable.
