Maja Gojkovic elected Serbia's parliament speaker

Belgrade, 23 April 2014 (MIA) - Maja Gojkovic of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) was elected Parliament Speaker on Wednesday.

Gojkovic was supported by 194 of 250 deputies, 14 voted against, nine abstained and 29 did not attend the session, Hina reports.

She said that she would insist on all MPs being equal in their rights and obligations, regardless of whether they were in the ruling majority or in the opposition.

The parliament also elected six deputy speakers, representatives of all political groups in the parliament.

On Thursday, the Serbian parliament is expected to discuss a bill on the government and ministries and vote on them on April 26, as a precondition for the forming of the new government. The new ministers will be sworn in in parliament on April 27.

In the March 16 elections, representatives of seven political lists made it into the parliament, and the majority of seats, 158, is held by a coalition led by the SNS of Serbia's future Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic.
