Thaci: Kosovo's goal is to be recognized by two thirds of UN member states

Pristina, 13 December 2014 (MIA) - Kosovan Foreign Minister Hashim Thaci, who was head of Government until recently, announced that the main goal of his new term will be to have Kosovo recognized by two thirds of the United Nations member countries, and by the five European Union member states that have yet to recognize Kosovo.

"The focus of Kosovan diplomacy will be on the process of obtaining international recognitions. We will strongly lobby to improve Kosovo's international position and establish diplomatic relations with a majority of the UN member states", Thaci wrote on his Facebook page.

Kosovo is still not recognized by EU members Romania, Slovakia and Spain, who fear setting a precedent for the separatist movements on their own territories, as well as Greece and Cyprus, who also have a traditional friendship with Serbia. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, nine years after a US led military intervention placed the province under international management.

Thaci added that Kosovo will continue to work to fully normalize relations with Serbia, a demand of the European Union placed before both countries, as a condition for their continued EU integration. "This dialogue should end with mutual recognition, that will set the grounds for a lasting peace between the two countries", Thaci writes.
