Turkish police arrested Zaman editor in chief and two dozens of Gulen supporters

Istanbul, 14 December 2014 (MIA) - Turkish police has arrested Ekrem Dumanli, the editor in chief of daily Zaman newspaper, in a police operation that began on Sunday morning, but which faced resistance from journalists and supporters. Dumanli was arrested on the second attempt of the police, who was prevented from entering the building in the first, early morning attempt.

Additional 23 persons, journalists, producers and policemen, who like Dumanli were close to the self-exiled preacher and political activist Fethullah Gulen, were arrested in the police raid, with a dozen more expected to follow. Gulen, once a close ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, turned against him in the past year. Erdogan has blamed Gulen of trying to overthrow him, using his influence in the police and the judiciary.
