Prosecutors order arrest of former American diplomat who spied on Greek Government

Athens, 17 February 2015 (MIA) - Greek prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for an American citizen and former high ranking diplomat in the US Embassy in Athens, charged with involvement in the 2004 wiretapping of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and many Government officials.

The American, identified only as W.D., allegedly worked for the Central Intelligence Agency in the mid 1990ies. He left Greece in 2005, after the revelation that Government officials were listened to, but returned to the country later, as a diplomat. The wiretapping allegedly begun before the 2004 Athens Olympic games.

According to the prosecutor's office, the American prepared a system for listening to phones of Government officials that could follow thousands of conversations, and used it to listen to about a 100 people, including also opposition members who used the Vodafone Greece cellphone network.

The spying network managed to tap into the Vodafone exchange switchboards and install software that allowed them to listen in the audio of the calls through prepaid mobile phones the spies bought. A total of 14 such phones were bought and used in the wiretapping, but the perpetrators were not discovered, until now. Greek prosecutors now say they have identified the wife of the charged American, and claim they have evidence she bought four cellphones, that were used in the spying.
