French Ambassador: Macedonia has no B plan, its A plan is to join EU

Skopje, June 22 (MIA) - Macedonia has no B-plan but just the plan A, i.e. to became part of the European family one day. It is our strategic vision for the region and we believe that one day the entire Balkans may join the European Union if the necessary reforms are met, French Ambassador in Skopje Bernard Valero says in an interview with the Radio Free Europe.

The new government's first priority should be to convince the European Commission 9EC) that Macedonia deserves positive report.

- One of Macedonia's top priorities is to get a date for the EU entry talks this year. EC, not France, is playing the main role in this process. In late October or early November, it will publish the annual report, which may or may not include a recommendation for launching the talks, Valero says.

Speaking about the reforms in Macedonia, Valero says they are not aimed to fulfil some Brussels' demand, but to bring welfare to citizens.

- The Government is obliged to improve the living standard of citizens. It is the main, first goal of the reform process, Valero said.

In regard to possible Greece's obstacle to Macedonia's road to EU membership, Valero says that the consensus rule is applicable for both NATO and EU.

- If only one country is against, we know the result. We do not wish to interfere in the settlement, but Skopje and Athens must come to a compromise and find mutually acceptable solution. If they fail, we may face similar situation as in Bucharest, because these are the rules of the game, Valero says.

He also pointed out that the position on Skopje-Athens name dispute of French President Nicolals Sarkozy, repeated in several occasions, is reflecting the country's official stance.

- Our position is very clear, but it does not demonstrates an enmity towards Macedonia. On the contrary, we are going to be very pleased if the solution (to the dispute) is found. We fully support the UN mediation in the process and sincerely hope for the two countries to come to a mutually acceptable solution, which is not only for the benefit of the two countries, but also for the entire region and Europe, Valero says.
